Lakers crowned champs

THE Maccabi Basketball Club has tasted success at the top level of competition, with its Lakers side toppling K1X 82-75 in a thrilling Premier League grand final on Monday night.

It was a great team effort that saw the Lakers get over the line in overtime, led by captain/coach and former NBL star Ben Knight, who hit 23 points.

Young gun Marcel Ninio and guard Matt Bineth were at their damaging best again, and Barry Dubovsky proved handy on the boards at both ends, while Simon Platt and Josh Cohen hit some big shots at crucial times of the game.

K1X was the better of the sides in the first half, sinking buckets from all across the court as Maccabi was struggling to find the basket at the other end.

But the Lakers hit their stride in the second half, matching their opposition and reeling in the narrow deficit.

Platt then had the crowd on its feet in the dying stages, when he hit a long bomb from beyond the arc to draw level.

But Maccabi ensured it would go one step further than its runner-up finish last season, with Knight stepping up in the extra period to lead his team to a remarkable seven-point victory.
